Government-subsidised care, explained simply

Most families we speak to don't realise how much help is available. Here's the short version, without the jargon.

1. Get an assessment

To get government-subsidised aged care, you need an aged care assessment, arranged through My Aged Care (1800 200 422). Not done yet? You can still enquire with us now while it's arranged.

2. The government pays some or all of the cost

How much depends on your means assessment, which looks at income and assets. Most people still pay a basic daily fee, and some pay towards their accommodation and other costs.

3. Homes set fees within the rules

Each home sets its own fees within government rules. My Aged Care has a fee estimator. We don't give guidance on fees or finances. We find out who has room.

Finding a room shouldn't be a second job

Most families start with a list of homes and a phone. Many calls end in "we're full", a waitlist, or a call back that never comes. Meanwhile a hospital discharge date or a carer's breaking point is getting closer.

You tell us once: the area, the type of place and when it's needed. We phone our partner homes near you, ask who has room, then connect you directly. You choose which homes to speak to. Nothing is booked without you.

Why not just use My Aged Care?

You should look at it. My Aged Care's Find a provider lists every government-funded home and shows availability. But availability changes quickly, and someone still has to ring around to check. That's what we do: we phone our partner homes to check who has room now, then connect you. It costs you nothing, and you can use both.

How it works

  1. Tell us what's needed

Suburb, type of place and when. About 2 minutes.

  2. We phone partner homes

We ask partner homes in or near your area who has room for the care and timing you need.

  3. We call you and connect you

Urgent: today (business hours). Otherwise within 1 business day. Not sure yet: we email first, then call. We'll tell you which homes received your enquiry.

Plain about how we're paid

You pay nothing. Partner aged care homes pay us for introductions, whether or not you choose that home. That's how we keep it free for families.

  • We'll always tell you which homes received your enquiry
  • We only share your details with your consent
  • We only contact partner homes, so other homes near you may have room too
  • We don't tell you which home to choose. The decision stays with you

Common questions

Does it cost me anything?

No. Our service is free for families. You never pay Aged Care Bookings.

How do you get paid?

Partner aged care homes pay us a fee for introductions, whether or not you end up choosing that home. That's how we keep it free for you. Read more.

How fast will you call me?

It depends on what you tell us. If you need care urgently (for example, a hospital discharge), we'll call you today during business hours. If you need care within 14–30 days or in 1–3 months, we'll call within 1 business day. If you're not sure yet, we'll email you first, then call. Our business hours are Mon–Fri, 9am–5pm. Enquiries made after hours are called the next business day.

Why not just use My Aged Care?

My Aged Care's Find a provider is a great place to see every government-funded home, and it shows availability. Availability listed online can change quickly, so we phone our partner homes to ask who has room now, then connect you. Use both. It costs you nothing.

What does "government-subsidised" mean?

The government pays some or all of the cost of aged care, depending on your means assessment. Most people still pay a basic daily fee, and some pay towards their accommodation and other costs. Each home sets its fees within government rules. For your own situation, use the fee estimator and information at My Aged Care or call 1800 200 422.

Do we need an assessment first?

For government-subsidised care, yes. Assessments are arranged through My Aged Care. If it isn't done yet, you can still enquire now. Homes will ask about it, so let us know where it's up to.

Which homes get my enquiry?

Partner homes in or near the area you gave that offer the type of place you need. We only share your enquiry with your consent, and we'll tell you which homes received it.

Is this a sales call?

No. We call to confirm what's needed, check you're happy for us to share your enquiry, and tell you which homes have room. There's no obligation and no pressure.

Do you cover every home in my area?

No. We only check with our partner homes, so other homes near you may also have places. You can search all government-funded homes at My Aged Care or call 1800 200 422.

Can you guarantee a place?

No. Availability changes daily, and each home decides who it can take. We'll tell you what partner homes report and connect you with them.

Will you tell us which home to choose?

No. We're not an aged care provider and we don't give guidance on care, costs or which home suits. We find out who has room and connect you. The choice is yours. For fees and eligibility, speak with the home or My Aged Care.

What's the difference between permanent and respite?

Permanent means moving into an aged care home long term. Respite is a short stay, for example while a carer takes a break or after a hospital stay. We can check both.

What happens to my details?

We share your enquiry only with partner homes in or near the area you gave, and only with your consent. See our Privacy Policy.

Important: Aged Care Bookings is a free enquiry and introduction service. We're not an aged care provider or a government service. We don't give care, financial or legal guidance, assess care needs or guarantee a place. We only contact our partner homes, and partner homes pay us for introductions. How we're paid.
